The Trading Cards
The Pokémon Trading Card Game (Pokémon TCG) is a strategy-based and collectable card game. There are typically 3-6 Pokémon sets published per year, printed in 10+ languages, and sold in 70+ countries! The Pokémon card types in virtually each deck consist of Pokémon (organized by their National Pokédex⚹ number) , Trainer, and Energy cards as well as their subcategories.
The cards themselves (if a Pokémon - type) display the individual Pokémon's name, evolution stage, and Pokédex number, as well as card number, type, and more. To identify the set, look for a little symbol at the bottom of the card, next to the card number.
The probability of a specific Pokémon card print is shown by its rarity symbol near the bottom of each card. However, Energy cards do not have rarity symbols neither do some promotional sets.

Professor Oak
⚹The Pokédex is a digital encyclopedia created by the fictional character Professor Oak and is a valuable tool to Trainers in the Pokémon world. It is designed to find and record data on each Pokémon the Trainer meets.
There are different types of Pokédexes and each Pokédex is special to a specific region with the exception of the National Pokédex which records information on all Pokémon known to exist.
The National Pokédex numbers start from the discovery of one Pokémon and continue with every new Pokémon discovered. For example, Bulbasaur was discovered first and therefore is number 001. Meltran, on the otherhand, is newly discovered and receives the number 808. There have been 806 Pokémon discovered between the two!
Note: as stated above, Pokémon are able to evolve. Once they do they are considered a new Pokémon and receive a new Pokédex number.
Types of Pokémon cards

Trainer cards: These cards don't usually directly attack but instead allow the player different moves by drawing more cards, choosing cards, trading cards, etc.

Trainer type card: Bonnie from Sun and Moon: Forbidden Light
Energy cards: A specific number of energy cards is needed for specific moves and cannot attack without the required energy attached to it.

The History
"Pokémon" is a franchise spanning video games, trading card games, anime tv series, film series, books, manga, music, toys, and other miscellaneous merchandise. Fictionally, Pokémon, or "Pocket Monsters", are creatures with special powers, able to evolve in a short period of time (compared to Earth's species). They are typically sought after to be trained (by "Pokémon Trainers") to fight other Pokémon for sport. Sounds cruel, doesn't it? Just think of them as domesticated animals who sometimes even become friends with their owners: check out Pikachu
There is no age limit to Pokémon. People from all over the world become obsessed over collecting them all through their video games, trading cards, toys, you name it. In fact, The English slogan for the franchise is "Gotta Catch 'Em All"! Note: The main Pokémon trainer's name is Ash Ketchum!
These pages are an introduction to the Pokémon newbies as well as a simple go to guide for those already familiar with Pokémon. For a more in depth look into the world of Pokémon check out bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net or pokemon.wikia.com.
